Paul Kerjean has dedicated his life to journalism. He even sacrificed his personal life for his work, which led to the breakdown of his marriage. In return, he managed to make the leap from a small regional newspaper to the Paris-based "La Tribune." An anonymous informant has also heard of Kerjean's skills as an investigative journalist and hands him explosive material in a parking garage: according to it, Jacques Benoit-Lambert, head of a state-owned energy company, is corrupt. Indeed, Kerjean uncovers further incriminating facts. His story makes the front page. Shortly thereafter, Benoit-Lambert is found dead. Kerjean soon begins to doubt that Benoit-Lambert shot himself out of shame, as officially reported.
