The enterprising hotel manager Sebastian (Sebastian Maniscalco), son of poor immigrants from Sicily, wants to marry the artist Ellie (Leslie Bibb), who comes from an extremely wealthy and long-established hotelier dynasty. When the 42-year-old travels to meet his wealthy parents-in-law Bill (David Rasche) and Tigger (Kim Cattrall) for the first time, the self-made social climber loses his cool: Sebastian has to bring his lower-middle-class dad along. The passionate hairdresser Salvo (Robert De Niro), who has achieved modest prosperity with the virtues of the little man in the land of opportunity, is unimpressed by the stately summer residence and the lavish lifestyle of his "in-laws." Much to the chagrin of his son, who wants to propose to Ellie, the senior seems determined to torpedo the union between the unequal families. While Sebastian breaks off relations with his dad in a fit of rage, Ellie, of all people, realizes what once made her future father-in-law her future husband's childhood hero.
