Edward Parker, in a shipwreck in the South Pacific, is saved by a passing ship, he able to send word to his anxious fiancee Ruth Thomas waiting for him in Apia of his safety and his imminent arrival in Apia. His travel to Apia is delayed when he is unceremoniously alighted at the ship's unofficial first port of call, an unnamed island inhabited by who appear to be the savage natives, British scientist Dr. Moreau, Moreau's assistant Montgomery, and a young woman name Lota, who he is told is the only female on the island and is not native to the island but presumably native to the South Pacific. Moreau welcomes him to stay in his secured compound until the next ship leaves the island. Edward being wary of his surroundings increases when he sees what he believes is Moreau torturing and perhaps killing one of the natives in his laboratory. In trying to show that he means Edward no harm, Moreau divulges the nature of his research: that he believes that all animals are evolutionarily headed toward being human, his experiments which accelerate that process. The "natives" to the island are really animals that have undergone this process, and while Moreau admits he has had some failures, he believes Lota, formerly a panther, is his crowning glory. Regardless, Edward is even more anxious to leave the island to expose who he considers evil Dr. Moreau and his research, he unaware that Moreau does have other thoughts for him. The only thing that may save Edward from a life in Moreau's compound is Ruth who is looking for her fiance.
