The Case of the Girl With the Long Face: George is concerned about Fern when she falls into a state of sadness, but doesn't know why; wanting to get to the bottom of the mystery, he enlists Buster Baxter, Private Eye. to investigate. After following the case, and coming to a number of dead-ends (such as a little spat Fern had with Muffy over wearing a lavendar hair bow, or jogging in the rain with Binky), the two finally learn that Fern was feeling sad, for no reason, and that she goes through sad spells from time to time, but it's during those sad spells that she's able to really dig deeper into her imagination for more story ideas. The Substitute Arthur: Arthur is going away to spend a weekend birdwatching with his uncle, much to Buster's horror. After cramming in as many activities as they can before Friday, Buster falls into a state of depression with Arthur gone, though his mother suggests he play with his other friends. Buster tries playing a board game with Brain, tennis with Francine, and goes shopping with Muffy, however, Buster is so deep into his mindset of how he and Arthur do things, that the others find him difficult to play with. After seeing what's become of him while trying to play with D.W. (who also wants to do things her own way), Buster realizes that he should try new things.
