Set in August 1944, the story takes place in liberated Belarus near the city of Lida, where enemy agents continue to operate behind Soviet lines. A clandestine radio station using the call sign "KAO" repeatedly transmits encrypted messages, signaling the presence of an active hostile intelligence network in the area. To eliminate the threat as quickly as possible, three SMERSH counterintelligence officers led by Captain Alyokhin are assigned to locate and dismantle the enemy reconnaissance group. Their mission becomes increasingly difficult because the region is crowded with competing armed forces and unstable allegiances. Alongside the hidden enemy operatives, numerous Polish detachments and German sabotage groups are also active in the area, making every lead uncertain and every movement dangerous. As the officers work under mounting pressure, the search becomes a tense race of deduction, surveillance, and counterintelligence in the final phase of the war.
