Plot Storyline
Mace Bishop (James Stewart) masquerades as a hangman in order to save his outlaw brother, Dee (Dean Martin), from the gallows, runs to Mexico chased by Sheriff July Johnson's (George Kennedy's) posse and fights against Mexican bandits.
Dee Bishop (Dean Martin) and his gang arrive in the Texan town of Val Verde to rob a bank. The robbery goes wrong and a shootout ensues. A gang member kills the wealthy husband of Maria Stoner (Raquel Welch) and the gang is arrested. In another town, Dee's older brother, Mace (James Stewart), learns of the botched robbery. He meets the hangman sent to execute his brother and his gang, and steals the hangman's clothes to pose as him. Once he arrives in Val Verde, Mace tricks sheriff July Johnson (George Kennedy) and sets the gang free. Once Johnson leads a posse out of town in pursuit of the gang, Mace robs the bank. Dee and his gang come across Maria and take her hostage. Mace meets up with them and they cross over into Mexico in territory that Maria warns is policed by bandoleros who kill any "gringos." Maria also warns that Johnson is infatuated with her and will therefore pursue her at any cost. Maria, who feels nothing for Johnson nor her dead husband who bought her from her family, falls for Dee after he protects her from the rest of the gang. As the gang starts to turn on each other, the posse tracks them to an abandoned town and captures them. Unfortunately for them, the bandoleros also arrive at the town and attack. With little choice, Johnson releases the gang so that they and the posse combine forces to fight off the bandoleros in a desperate, lethal battle for survival.
