Plot
Storyline
In response to a new friend's queries, Vera recounts her life, starting with her no-good husband Jean, who has been using her to keep his failing building business afloat - up to the present affair she's having with Cayre.
In the seaside town of Thionville-sur-Mer, Vera Baxter has taken refuge in the remote villa she came to rent for the summer. Her husband Jean-wealthy, unfaithful, and often away-once paid Michel, a journalist, to become her lover, a painful experience she never recovered from. While Jean is with yet another woman, Vera is visited by a mysterious stranger. Throughout the afternoon, in the nearly empty modern villa, the two women talk. As Vera recounts eighteen years of loyalty to an unfaithful husband, she confronts her past, her disillusionment, and her emotional dependence, reflected back at her by this enigmatic visitor who feels like her double.
