Best friends Naomi Thomas and Marcus Kelly work together at Lisa Robinson's restaurant, Agora. A biochemist by training, Naomi is the strategic one in the friendship, while Marcus tends to fly by the seat of his pants always relying on Naomi to follow through for him. Their work life is threatened as Lisa is selling the restaurant to achieve a better work/life balance, the buyer planning on turning the property into a parking lot. Naomi is able to convince Marcus not only to think about them buying the restaurant instead, but to speak to Marcus' successful restaurateur uncle, Richard Kelly, with who Marcus has somewhat of a strained relationship, for advice on how to achieve it. Richard advises them to enter a three-part mocktail contest culminating on Valentine's Day, not only as their business plan is to focus on mocktails, but that there is substantial first prize money to get them started. In the process, they meet Hal, a tea master, who provides them both a different elixir for their mocktails. The one provided to Marcus was by accident used in a mocktail created by Naomi and consumed by seven people, three pairs who end up falling immediately in love: Lisa and her favorite author, E.J. Cortland, who is also fighting a work/life balance issue in writing the final book in a series; Richard, who has passed along to Marcus the notion of avoiding love as his long ended marriage was a disaster, and his platonic best friend of fifty years Luciana, the two who have historically gotten on each other's nerves despite their BFF status; and sworn enemies Jane Serrano, Naomi and Lisa's yogina, and Steven Young, the host of the mocktail contest, their animosity due to her spiritual versus his corporate mentality. The reason Hal provided this specific elixir to Marcus, the seventh, was his admission to him that he has always been in love with Naomi, but had never acted on his feelings in deference to her own romantic relationship status, she only having recently broken up with her last boyfriend Chris. Hal told Marcus that the elixir was a love potion to be consumed by him and Naomi so that they would mutually fall in love. The end result is that Marcus was able to profess his undying love to her, he admitting to her the secret ingredient the reason for the sudden and somewhat unexpected feelings of love with the individuals in the other three pairs. Getting over the initial incredulity, Naomi and Marcus decide that have to find out for sure if the love potion really was the reason behind what is happening, the answer which can only come from a now absent Hal. In the process, Naomi also has to figure out her true feelings for Marcus.
