Pescia, Tuscany, in the early 17th century: Young Benedetta is sent to a convent by her parents, who are convinced that their daughter is under Christ's special protection. Years later, she is a respected nun, yet the religious visions that have accompanied her since her youth continue to arouse suspicion. When Benedetta is afflicted by mysterious pains, a young novice is assigned to care for her: Bartolomea, who fled violence in her family home and was admitted to the convent only through Benedetta's intercession. A close bond grows between the devout, strong-willed Benedetta and the frivolous Bartolomea, a bond that increasingly defies the convent's rules. At the same time, Benedetta's visions become more frequent - until one morning she wakes up with stigmata on her hands and feet. For many, the stigmata are a sign of divine election, which is why she is appointed the new abbess. For others, the wounds are a cheap attempt at deception, and Benedetta's new status is a thorn in their side: privileges, influence, and growing public veneration meet with envy, doubt, and attempts to uncover the secret behind the "miracles."
