The story takes place in a Chicago neighborhood that has become a microcosm of the larger human struggle under alien occupation. Gabriel's brother, Rafe (Jonathan Majors), is a prominent figure in the resistance, and his legacy looms large over Gabriel's decisions. The film also follows Officer William Mulligan (John Goodman), a complex character whose true loyalties and motivations are gradually revealed.
