Margot Hammond, a world-renowned pianist, has been on tour and seems to have lost her passion in her performances. This has been picked up by critic Evelyn March in two rather negative reviews. While she received favorable comments on her technical skills, musicality seemed to be lacking. Margot is preparing for some Christmas concerts in New York City when the theater is closed for safety issues. She decides to meet her family at the Chateau Neuhaus in Boulder to spend the holidays with them. While there, she runs into Jackson Lewis, her ex-boyfriend with whom she had a painful split. She had a solo tour offer, but he wanted to stay in place. Jackson is in a bind. He has agreed to direct a Christmas concert for the Chateau in 10 days for which the performers, one by one, have withdrawn due to medical or family issues. He hears her playing Christmas music in the lounge and asks her to help with the concert. Reluctantly she agrees. When she accompanies him to a music store to get new cello strings and sound post adjustments, they bump into Sam Bennet, a violinist from the famous Lafayette Quartet. They have been inactive for years since a split cause by Sarah Baxter, Sam's girlfriend and fellow violinist, wanting to settle down and have a family while he wanted to continue the ambitious tour career. Margot recognizes him. Together, she and Jackson talk the two into linking up with the violist. Their cello player died, so Jackson offers to fill in for him. The show arrives, Evelyn Marsh happens to be there, too, and Margot plays "O, Holy Night" in memory of her father. It's inspired. Evelyn tells her so. Margot and Jackson decide to give their relationship another go.
