In Gatlin, Nebraska, the orphans are transferred to the house of people from Hemingford Home that offered to lodge them. Their former teacher, Mrs. Burke, warns the hosts that the children are evil, but they do not believe in her. Meanwhile, the journalist Garrett, who was fired from Newsweek, is driving to Gatlin with his estranged teenage son Danny to cover the recent events in the town for a minor newspaper.
