In the town of Pinewood, Washington in the shadow of the Joint Lewis-McChord Army Base, Amanda Edwards, curator of the Pinewood Heritage Museum, is both an army brat and army widow, her husband Rick who didn't make it home from a mission just before Christmas two years ago. Amanda has been unable to move on with her life since, not having touched any of Rick's possessions, having kept the last telephone message he left saved on their answering machine, and having lost the spirit of Christmas. In her work being cut back due to financial shortfalls at the museum, Amanda rents out her small furnished guest house, her new tenant, Master Sergeant Jim Mullins, who has come to the hospital at Lewis-McChord for the remainder of treatment for a leg injury sustained in battle. Although neither looking for anything, Amanda and Jim seem to be falling for each other as they spend time together, including working together on a Christmas themed fundraiser to save the museum, and in he reigniting the spirit of Christmas in her. The factors in if there is a chance for a life together are whether Amanda is ready to move on with life with someone other than Rick, and even if she is, whether she is prepared to take a chance with another soldier and the possible pain she might have to face like she did with Rick, especially as her longtime friend from high school, lawyer Craig Fletcher, a civilian, has long been in love with her himself.
