Evan Shaw (Aaron Eckhart) is an internationally operating hit-man who carries out contract killings for a special division of the CIA. The head of the division is his old friend Kevin Angler (Tim Roth). Shaw, who lives in complete anonymity and solitude, learns of his assignments through the classified ads in various newspapers. His current assignment takes him to Rome, where he finds a suitcase containing weapons, money, and details about his next target in the luxury hotel booked for him. He is greatly surprised when, one night, he receives a visit from a young woman who seems to know more about his business than he does himself. Kacey Walker (Abigail Breslin) is an analyst with the British foreign intelligence service MI6 and has tracked down the lone hit-man. What's more, she can provide Shaw with credible proof that his friend and boss, Kevin Angler, has been dead for quite some time. Who, then, is behind the assignments Shaw continues to receive? Together, the very unlikely duo sets off for Malta, where not only some bitter truths await the taciturn ex-agent. Kacey, too, must reveal her own secret.
