While visiting with relations in London, 18-year-old Melinda Greyton meets at a party and falls in love at first sight with 31-year-old Major Michael Curragh, and the feeling is mutual. These feelings for Michael have been a long time coming, as his loving Aunt Jessica can tell that he has been a lonely man. As Melinda and Michael start spending time together, little things happen that make Melinda wonder if she truly loves Michael or is just obsessed with him. Regardless, they end up getting married. What Melinda does not know is that the true explanation for Michael's inconsistent behavior is that he is working as a Soviet spy, that focus on which is largely the reason he has never fallen in love before and which does not diminish the fact that he is truly in love with her. Michael did not clear the marriage with his Soviet handlers, who have issue not so much specifically with Melinda but with him getting married at all. As such, both Michael and Melinda's lives may be at risk, Melinda if she ever seems to be coming close to discovering the truth about what Michael is doing, and Michael if he is ever seen to be a liability to his handlers regardless of the vital information which he has been providing.
