On Christmas Eve, cynical NYPD detective John McClane arrives in Los Angeles aiming to patch things up with his estranged wife, Holly, at her company's holiday party in the nearly completed Nakatomi Plaza skyscraper. Instead, his ambitious reunion plans are cut short when a heavily armed extremist team, led by ruthless criminal mastermind Hans Gruber, seizes the towering, 35-story building and takes everyone hostage.
