Busy parents take their son to relatives in southern Bohemia. Milan is especially curious about his grandfather, whom he has heard a lot about at home - mostly that he acts like a "little guy". As far as his first impression is concerned, he is certainly not disappointed. He arrives with his parents at the best, just as Uncle Vaclav and his aunt are chasing a piglet around the yard. Ferda is not just an ordinary pig to fatten up, but also his grandfather's friend. That's why Grandpa sometimes lets him out of the pigsty to run around. This is where the threads of the story begin to unwind about how old age, which "walks badly but counsels well", helps the young to learn to enjoy each day, teaching them to see and recognize the beauty (perhaps with the help of a rainbow ball) that others do not see or see differently.
