Ruth, a young bookseller from England, meets John Wiley, who owns a tea plantation in Sri Lanka, and follows him blindly to Asia after they marry. But she soon discovers that behind the plantation's luxury lies a dark past. John's father, Tom, built the estate on an ancient elephant migration route. As the animals continue to follow the path to their water source, dangerous clashes with the plantation's residents occur time and again. Ruth also gets to know her husband's lifestyle better; he likes to spend his evenings with his drinking buddies and clings to his bachelor habits - a lout who often gives Ruth the cold shoulder. The couple, who married impulsively, find themselves in constant conflict as a result. The domineering legacy of John's late father and the servant Appuhamy also make life difficult for Ruth. The unhappy Ruth now spends a lot of time with Dick, John's American overseer, trying to forget her worries. However, when cholera breaks out on the plantation, all three are put to the test.
