A series of tragic events force Irene, the wealthy wife of industrialist George Girard, to renounce her former worldly self and enter the world of the perpetually impecunious. Without a second thought, Irene begins to mingle with unmarried mothers who struggle to eke out an existence, ailing streetwalkers, and exploited employees, determined to find a purpose and meaning in life.
