Is a dramatization of close to two decades in the Steve Abbott-Alysia Abbott father-daughter relationship. This phase of their story begins in 1974 and just widowed Steve making the very conscious decision for him and then five year old Alysia to move from the Midwest to San Francisco so that Steve could pursue his life more freely as a largely autobiographical poet and a gay man, and his want to raise Alysia without the restraints he felt growing up as it affected him as being gay while still being able to admit at least to himself that he was ill-prepared to be a single father let alone a gay one. With the latter issue, it was against the wishes of his mother-in-law who was aware of what was happening in Steve and her daughter Barbara's lives, and thus her want for Alysia to be under the care of their family. The push and pull between Steve and Alysia over this time period changes as Alysia grows up and more fully understands how her father's permissive behavior affected her, as she learns about her family often through Steve's poems which he was willing to share with the world even before with her, and as homophobia, even in generally liberal San Francisco, was pretty baked into America culture, only exacerbated in the 1980s with the onset of AIDS.
