Desmond T. Doss, a boy raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, witnessed the destructive impact of violence at an early age. This experience fueled his desire to become an honest, God-fearing man who would never be afraid to stand up for his beliefs. After the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Desmond felt an overwhelming urge to do his part. He enlisted in the US Army with a strong desire to become a combat medic. However, Desmond's pacifistic Seventh-day Adventist beliefs soon put him at odds with his superiors and comrades. After all, he refused to participate in gun training, triggering tension with superiors and comrades. But despite these challenges, Desmond remained steadfast in his views. When his unit was deployed to Japan during the brutal Battle of Okinawa, Desmond found himself in a perilous situation. As an unarmed conscientious objector, he was forced to put his faith and sense of duty to the ultimate test.
