The Alps, 15th-century Austria. As the last Germanic pagans transition into Christianity, young goatherd Albrun and her mother lead a harsh life of exclusion in a weather-beaten mountain hut, branded as witches. Following her mother's agonising death, Albrun, now an unwed mother, continues to endure the villagers' psychological torment, burdened by the indelible stigma of witchcraft. Haunted by their hatred, Albrun forms a tentative friendship with a local woman, hoping to find acceptance. Instead, she only unearths well-buried memories and reopens old wounds. And convinced that a sinister presence in the forest guides her, a lifetime of pain and injustice invites paranoid delusions and a baneful curse worthy of a genuine dark force.
