Gethsemane is still in the midst of burgeoning romances with both school colleague Griff and with Inspector O'Reilly. After an absence of a few months, she also receives a visit from Eamon on what is the town's first Eamon McCarthy Day. It coincides with a visit from the States of her younger brother Jackson, who has been managing the family's music store ever since their father passed a year ago. While Jackson tends to take up a lot of proverbial oxygen in any room, he takes up even more when shortly after his arrival, he discovers a just murdered dead body in the town's hotel with he seeing only the outline of the murderer running off. Gethsemane can't help but investigate if only to protect Jackson, his life potentially at risk if the murderer believes he can identify him/her. Gethsemane summons Eamon for his assistance in the investigation. They are also visited by someone else who recently passed, Captain MacLachlan, who was himself murdered by the victim three months ago, his inability to enter his eternal resting place probably having to do with his murder not even yet having been discovered. As they come up with a suspect list, they come to the early conclusion that the murder has something to do with what would probably be considered a priceless museum worthy violin that the victim purportedly was trying to sell.
