Antoine (Pascal Elbe), a handsome history teacher in his early fifties, skillfully ignores the signs of his own aging: he doesn't seem to care about his students' comments or his girlfriend's emotional state. He even ignores the ringing of his alarm clock in the morning. He drives his new neighbor Claire (Sandrine Kiberlain) mad with deafening noise. Her outbursts of anger roll off Antoine's back. It is only when he ignores the fire alarm at school that Antoine is forced to face up to the unpleasant fact: He is as good as deaf. A hearing aid soon opens up a new world for him, but this does not fit in with his self-image as a middle-aged man. Even worse for Antoine, however, is the fact that he suddenly notices everything he could otherwise ignore. His mother with dementia, his overburdened sister, the teachers he has snubbed for years - everything is now hitting him unfiltered. There is only one person who doesn't bother him: Violette (Manon Lemoine), Claire's little daughter, who has stopped speaking since her father's death. Suddenly, contrary to his nature, he takes an interest in others. What's more, he falls in love with Violette's mother. But hearing aids are no guarantee of good communication.
