Plot
Storyline
An attractive pair agrees to be each other's supposed significant other throughout the holidays to keep their meddling families at bay.
It's the December holiday season in New York City. Once an aspiring actress, Jewish-American Julie Greene is now the theater critic for the New York Sentinel, she who can't write a negative review in knowing what it's like on the receiving end and in wanting to provide support to the theater community. She and her last boyfriend Ben broke up last New Year's Eve, and as such, her mother, Maxine Greene, is trying to set her up with some old "loser" boyfriends just so that Julie won't be alone for the holidays, especially on New Year's Eve. Italian-American Rob Marino, an advertising art director, likes the freedom of freelancing. He treats his dating life much the same, he just having broken up with the latest in a long series of short term girlfriends, much to the chagrin of his parents, especially his mother, Evie Marino. Julie and Rob meet when he answers her personal ad, both looking for a "fake" significant other for the holidays, especially for holiday events. For Julie, the move is primarily to stop Maxine from acting the matchmaker. For Rob, the move is primarily to present a girlfriend to his maternal grandmother Theresa Scotti, who is like a second mother, who is not expected to live into the new year and whose dying wish is to see Rob happy with who will be his wife. Their plan is to get through the holidays only to announce in the new year that they have broken up. Able to get over a bumpy start, Julie and Rob have to convince not only both sets of family but friends that they truly are boyfriend/girlfriend which may be difficult due to circumstances. But as they start to fall for each other, a happily-ever-after for Julie and Rob may be impeded by the lie which brought them together in the first place.
