The deaf and mute writer Maddie Young moves from the city to an isolated cabin in the woods. Maddie was a normal child, but when she was thirteen years old, she had meningitis and never became normal again. She has a friend, Sarah Green, who lives nearby and is learning deaf-mute sign language with her. Her sister Max insists that she should return to the city but loves living in a calm cabin.
