Encouraged by his friend and coworker Phil to get back on the proverbial horse following a very recent break-up with his now former fiancee, Robert, a Wall Street investment broker, picks up Daphne, currently working waiting tables as she tries to find her professional path, at a bar for what he probably expects to be a one night stand. However, after that substance driven one-nighter at a motel, Robert, groggy, awakens to find himself in the passenger seat of his classic sedan with Daphne behind the wheel as they are about to cross the border into Canada where he's never been. Daphne, upon discovery of something during their encounter the previous night, has taken a measure to ensure that Robert does what she wants, which she eventually divulges is for him to go with her to her hometown of North Bay, Ontario to pass himself off to her parents as her fiance. Partly because of the specific measure that Daphne had taken to convince him in addition to coming to the conclusion that she could have done much worse, such as steal his car and rob him, if she was truly out to bilk him, Robert somewhat willingly goes along for this literal and proverbial ride with her despite he having had his own important plans for these next immediate few days. In their less than smooth ride en route to North Bay, they go on a journey of discovery, about each other, this task which Robert will learn is not as simple as trying to convince her parents that she has her life on what they would consider on track, and about their current individual situations regardless of if they had never met.
