Thirty year old Carol Solomon barely ekes out a living as an elocution teacher and the more lucrative work as a voice over actor, she trying to follow in the footsteps of her successful father, who goes by the stage name Sam Soto, and with who she still lives in her precarious financial situation. Sam has been up front with her in that only a handful get most of that voice over work - he being one of that handful - and most of it in its entirety, apart from dubbing of female roles, the domain of men, whose speaking voices the public generally prefers to hear. Carol's life takes a further hit when Sam asks her to move out to make way for his thirty-one girlfriend Jamie to move in - she who Carol and Carol's sister Dani, a hotel concierge, mockingly refer to as Sam's groupie - leaving Carol no other option but to move in with Dani and Dani's work-at-home husband, Moe. Upon the death of Don LaFontaine, the undisputed king of the voice over business, the others near the top of heap, most specifically Sam and younger Gustav Warner, battle it out to be known as Don's heir apparent. It becomes even more important to get the foot in the door of the space vacated by Don as arguably Don's most famous voice over work, which begins with the subordinate clause "In a world...", will be resurrected by a new voice over actor for the trailers for an upcoming movie quadrology. Carol's career gets an unexpected bump by being in the right place at the right time for some voice over work that was supposed to go to Gustav. Gustav and Sam have no idea who the voice is that stole the work from Gustav, and Gustav further doesn't know that Carol, who he meets at a party, is either that voice or Sam's daughter. Thus begins the battle behind the scenes between the three, Carol, who is grateful for any voice work, getting some help from Lewis the sound engineer at the studio where she does most of her work, socially awkward Lewis who has a crush on her. Meanwhile, Carol living at Dani and Moe's leads indirectly to the exposure of some cracks in their marriage, those cracks largely formed by each taking the other for granted as a romantic partner.
