Stockholm detective Erik Backstrom is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a young woman in his hometown of Norrland in northern Sweden. Her abandoned car at the edge of the forest, traces of blood in the trunk: the evidence points to a crime. Erik sets to work with uneasy feelings. He has traumatic memories of a mission 15 years ago in which his brother took his own life. The fact that he has to work with Torsten, the stepfather of his nephew Peter, doesn't make things any easier for him, as the thuggish village policeman is clearly carrying a personal feud into the case. Torsten believes the well-known thug Jari is the culprit and wants to prove his guilt by any means necessary. However, Erik refuses to be swayed, especially as he suspects Torsten of abusing Peter and his ex-sister-in-law Karin. When Jari dies after being arrested by Torsten and the young woman's body turns up, Erik harbors serious suspicions about his colleague. Left to his own devices, the returnee puts all his eggs in one basket to solve the mysterious case.
