The Great Holiday Dash is an annual television show in which contestants compete in Christmas puzzles and activities, traveling across the country in what is ultimately a scavenger hunt, the last person standing winning the grand prize of $1 million. What this season's 20 contestants don't know until the start of the dash is that they've been paired into 10 teams, each in the winning pair to get that $1 million. One of those pairs is Wes Cosgrove and Avery Miller, who would have preferred any other teammates; they're polar opposites who had a run-in before each knew that the other would be on the show. Wes is an ultra-competitive recently-retired NHL player who is trying, so far unsuccessfully, to find his next phase of life that will keep him active and in the public consciousness as a celebrity, as his fame is fading. Avery is an elementary-school teacher who doesn't crave the spotlight; her sister Ruby entered her for the show without her knowledge, but if she won she might have the opportunity to start a childhood-literacy non-profit. For Wes, the only other person he would have least preferred as a teammate is Nash Reynolds, who seems to beat him on any opportunity he's attempted in his post-hockey life. Wes and Avery quickly realize that they must work together as a team to succeed, Wes using his strength and Avery using her brains, supporting each other in their weaknesses--he the dumb jock and she the uncoordinated bookworm. As they experience some success in the challenges and get to know the other contestants, each gets a different view of the competition--and starts to fall for the other. Whether or not they win, what might affect their partnership is determining what is real between them versus what they do to make good television.
