Monica Miller, an emergency room nurse practitioner in Boston, has immersed herself in work, not having taken a vacation in four years in exerting control of her life to advance her career. When Monica doesn't get the promotion she was expecting, both her new boss and her mother encourage her to get a better work-life balance by taking a vacation, her mother suggesting doing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, her parents having met while individually going on the pilgrimage. As such, Monica has to learn to let go of control and learn how to accept assistance graciously to experience all that the Camino has to offer. Within her guided walk led by Consuelo are Ernesto, Luis and Mateo, a grandfather-father-son trio also from Boston but Ernesto and Luis who grew up in northern Spain near the end of the route. Divorced Luis has the difficult position of being both father and son, neither which he has felt he has succeeded in, the reason he is on the pilgrimage. Along the way, Monica and Luis make a romantic connection, which they have to figure out fits in with their individual reasons for being on the pilgrimage.
