The middle-aged actress June Buckridge has spend the last four years of her life in portraying the popular character of district nurse and local sage "Sister George" in the soap opera "Applehurst"". Unlike the saintly character who made her famous, June has a number of bad habits. She is a hard drinker, a chain smoker, and rather quarrelsome. June lives with her younger lover Alice "Childie" McNaught, a child-like amateur poet who still plays with dolls. Alice has a low-ranking job in the fashion industry, but she is financially dependent on June. June is worried that she is about to get fired from her television show. Several of the show's more established characters were recently written out, in an attempt to turn the show towards a new direction. Her personal life is also not going well. The temperamental June has been overly possessive of Alice, and she has at time abused and humiliated the younger woman. Alice starts displaying a rebellious streak, unwilling to be the submissive partner. While drunk and angry, June randomly attacks and sexually harasses two young Catholic nuns. The official protests of the nuns' Mother Superior and the Archbishop cause the powerful network producer Mrs Croft to personally deal with June's erratic behavior. Mrs. Crofts hinders June's ambitions in several ways, while apparently falling for Allice and helping her career in ways that June never could. June's furious attempts at retaliation only result in estranging her lover and destroying her own career,
