Interpreter Patience Portefeux (Isabelle Huppert) lives with constant money worries. The costs of her mother's (Liliane Rovere) home weigh heavily on her and her job at the Paris drug squad is miserably paid. When Patience translates a phone call between Arabic-speaking dealers, she recognizes Afid (Yasin Houicha), the son of her mother's loving carer. Out of solidarity, she warns Khadidja (Farida Ouchani) and ensures that the drug courier makes his delivery of hashish disappear before it is seized by the investigators. Having lost her way, Patience now goes all out. She tracks down the hidden marijuana with the help of retired drug sniffer dog DNA and goes into business with the stolen goods. With a designer hi-jab and tough negotiating skills, the graduate Arabist slips into the role of a Maghrebi drug godmother who really stirs up the Parisian drug milieu.
