Psychiatrist Flores is called to his office by the police at night to examine a driver involved in an accident, where he meets retired special investigator Vogel, who not long ago was tasked with solving the case of a missing girl in the remote mountain village. As the two men talk, past events come back to life. When 16-year-old, deeply religious Anna Lou Kastner fails to return home from choir practice, nationally renowned special investigator Vogel and his ambitious assistant Borghi are sent to the Alpine village to lead the investigation. As so often, Vogel relies on the cooperation of the media in his investigations, in this case career journalist Stella Honer. Thanks to Vogel's dubious methods, the popular teacher Loris Martini, who was the last person to speak to Anna Lou, soon becomes the prime suspect. As more and more evidence points in his direction, the case seems to be solved. But Anna Lou's body has still not been found and the chain of evidence against Martini is too weak to hold him in custody for long. Shortly afterwards, Vogel is alerted by veteran journalist Beatrice Leman to a series of unsolved murders of young women that shook the region 30 years ago.
