In a fit of rage, the honest foundry worker, Francois, shoots and kills the unscrupulous vaudeville dog trainer, Valentin, with a slim semi-automatic pistol. Now, holed up in his cramped apartment at the top of a narrow six-storey building, Francois spends a long and sleepless night, recollecting the fateful events before Valentin's untimely death through a series of three interconnecting episodes. Unable--and unwilling--to escape, as the police are closing in on the doomed working-class hero, Francois recalls his star-crossed love affair with the delicate florist, Francoise, and his tangled relationship with the deceased's former assistant, Clara.
