Stella is one of many applicants taking the entrance exam at the Theatre des Amandiers in Nanterre near Paris. There are only twelve coveted places for acting training. Her audition is daring, and Stella is one of the lucky ones. She and her classmates throw themselves headlong into their new lives. There are time-consuming theater rehearsals, a trip to the Actors Studio in New York, and above all, flirtations and budding romantic relationships within the group. For Stella, the bad boy Etienne becomes a challenge. The tragedies of life do not stop at the microcosm of the theater, as theater director Patrice Chereau must learn. In the end, it is the intense experience of working on their new play that lifts the troupe back up. And Stella, too, can look forward again.
