In 1989 on the outskirts of Bilbao (Basque Country, north to Spain) live Oscar and Andoni, two friends with the same problem: they have no job after they were fired from the factory where they worked, as well their supervisor Juanma, a former upper-class man who lost his lifestyle and his money. The gang completes with Nestor, another fired worker who recently opened a video-rental shop obsessed that the VHS videotapes are the future for his family despite the debts incurred when his two associates declined in the last second to support money to the business. Not worrying about their respective daughters and having an estranged relation with them, the four men find themselves forced to travel to Berlin for a feminine gymnastics school competition when their mothers all have bad hangovers after a boozy party night and can't stand up, let alone travel. Reluctant and with a strong desire to return to Bilbao. German gym teacher Nina confronts them, determined to win the competition. On the journey, the four men start to realize how little they know their own children, while Nestor becomes obsessed with the aging bus driver, Arrupe, a former priest and teacher whose abusive character has left him deaf in one ear. An unexpected event changes everything for them: It's November 9 and the Berlin Wall is coming down.
