Having married Ellen and sired Missy, Clark is happy toiling as bread-winning farmer for years. Then a long drought ruins all harvests, so he misses several mortgage payments and banker Harris considers foreclosure. When Clark's parents arrive for a visit, Ellen has taken on a town job as seamstress, but soon catches scarlet fever, which proves fatal. Clark and his father work their tails off to strike a new water well, if possible. Missy's "help" causes a house fire, but more help arrives thanks to the neighbors Ben and Sarah, whom buddies Clark and Ellen had brought together to raise their children from respective earlier marriages.
