In 1918, shortly before the end of the First World War, Alsace is part of the German Empire. Since Luise's mother died, the young woman has been looking after the remote farm alone. When the Frenchwoman Helene suddenly knocks on her door while fleeing from the Germans, Luise initially wants to send her away. But Helene is pursued by Hermann, a German soldier and deserter who has been wounded in the leg. What to do? Shortly afterwards, when a German captain inspects Luise's house in search of the deserter, she hides Hermann and passes Helene off as a cousin. She offers them both protection ... While Hermann deliberately opens his wound again and again so that he can stay longer, Helene helps Luise with the harvest and the animals. Slowly, feelings develop between the two women. Helene has known for a long time that she loves women. For this reason, she wanted to flee to Holland so that she could live freely there. Luise, on the other hand, struggles with her deeply rooted Christian faith, but nevertheless accepts the love affair. One evening, Hermann observes the two women in bed and tries to convince Luise that this relationship is against God's will. Hermann also feels affection for Luise and sows doubt in her mind. When the captain turns up unexpectedly and the situation comes to a head, Luise has to make a decision: Will she accompany Helene to Holland or lead an exemplary Christian life?
