American chorus girl Sandra Carpenter, in London for a show which shut down after four days of production, has resorted to taxi dancing in order to survive. While she sees an audition with playboy impresario Robert Fleming as her way out of taxi dancing while still being realistic in show business being cutthroat often with such auditions being a casting couch, Sandra doesn't attend the audition instead meeting with Scotland Yard in the belief that she may have pertinent information on the disappearance of her friend, fellow taxi dancer Lucy Barnard. An investigation led by Inspector Harley Temple, Scotland Yard has received a series of anonymous notes paraphrasing the poems of Charles Baudelaire on beauty and death, each note followed by the disappearance of a beautiful young woman, the latest being Lucy. With Scotland Yard not having the necessary female detectives and seeing that Sandra is a bright and observant young woman, Temple hires her as a detective on the case to lure the perpetrator out into the open in the way they believe he is contacting his victims: via the personal ads. Temple and his staff will answer the ads which seem the most likely to have been placed by the perpetrator, with Sandra to keep the dates made, she well aware of the risks in dealing with a probable murderer. She goes on date after date, some that have their own risks even if not with who is deemed the perpetrator, while some possibilities end up being dead ends. But the case takes a turn when she falls in love with who is a prime suspect.
