Rachel Becker's professional and personal lives are about to intersect. On the professional side, she is a sculpting instructor, although she still sculpts solely for herself in her one exhibit being panned by a critic shaking her confidence and thus she no longer wanting to put herself out there by displaying her work publicly. Personally, she, not yet married or in a serious relationship, has set near impossible dating standards. She wants any of her relationships to be like her parents', who she has never seen argue with each other. Her standards do not stop her overbearing mother Judith from ambushing her with one blind date after another, the more stereotypically Jewish the boy i.e. a doctor or a lawyer, the better. The intersection begins as she, moving into a hyper-realistic mode to her work, has sculpted what she considers the ideal physical specimen of a man, which she's nicknamed Clay. As a lark, Doris, Rachel's best friend and neighbor, places an amulet around the statue's neck as it purportedly has the powers of the Jewish myth of the golem: turning inanimate objects animate. The next morning, Rachel is surprised to see that Clay has indeed come alive. She also learns that Clay's mission is solely to make Rachel happy, he having had the year and a half of watching her as she created him to be able to attend to her needs, and if he doesn't know what she wants, then he listens and responds thusly. He therefore is indeed her perfect man, at least on paper as she may discover that she needs more than perfection, she needing and wanting to be challenged, what she finds her brother-in-law's best friend David Cohen, a former lawyer turned aspiring stand-up comic, does, she unaware that in she previously ignoring him that he has secretly wanted to date her as long as he's known her.
