The setting is the beach town of Point Dume. A young woman named Arletty arrives in town in hopes of reuniting with her estranged father, who works in the town as an artist. She finds her father's beachfront house to be abandoned, as he disappeared some time ago. His diary has been left behind, recording his disturbing nightmares and his observations that darkness is consuming the town. Also visiting the town is the hedonistic aristocrat Thom and his female companions Toni and Laura, who soon befriend Arletty. A local weirdo named Charlie warns the newcomers that a "dark stranger" is about to return to town on the 100th anniversary of his previous visit, that the Moon will turn red, and that the town will be overrun by evil. The "stranger" turns out to be a so-called "Messiah of Evil" returning from the ocean's depths, and the town's resident start transforming into undead creatures.
