In a near dystopian future, young Skalde lives with her mother in a closed society in the forest. She herself was born there, but her mother was an outsider who was only allowed to stay because of her love for Skalde's father - a rare occurrence. The inhabitants of the forest live self-sufficiently, feeding themselves through harvesting and hunting. But the peaceful community is increasingly confronted with mysterious events. Animal carcasses are found again and again; they fear the return of wolves to the area. One night, a little girl appears at Skalde's door, claiming to be a wolf herself. It reminds Skalde of the legend of the wolf children: creatures who mingle with humans and swap their children for their own. The presence of the unknown child also causes unrest among Skalde's fellow villagers. Influenced by her mother, Skalde takes the girl under her wing and agrees to care for her until her first milk tooth falls out: proof of her humanity. When two young women disappear without a trace shortly afterwards, suspicion immediately falls on the little outsider.
