In the Nineteenth Century, in Rotterdam, Hans von Arnim arrives at the home in a mill of Prof. Gregorius Wahl in an island to research the centenary of his famous Stone Women Carousel that he inherited from his father. Prof. Wahl introduces his servant Selma and Dr. Loren Bohlem to Hans and offers an office for his work. Prof. Wahl is a professor of fine arts and teaches sculptures using his model Annelore to several students, including Hans' former sweetheart Liselotte Kornheim and his best friend Ralf Herbert. While working, Hans meets the beautiful daughter of Prof. Wahl, Elfie, and she asks him to return at eleven PM to see her. They have a torrid one night stand, but on the next day, Hans learns from Prof. Wahl that she has a disease and cannot have strong emotions. When she meets Hans again, he calls off their relationship and she dies. Hans leaves the mill completely disturbed and on the next day, he learns that Elfie is safe and sound.
