After many years of war, a soldier fights along side his life long friend and brother in arms in battle. When the dust is settled and the battle is over, he discovers his friend dead on the battlefield and a mysterious woman among the fallen. She soon quickly disappears. Determined to keep his oath and to see his friend makes it home to his family to be buried he embarks on a long journey eastward pulling his friend on a makeshift gurney behind him. Struggling to find food and shelter along the way and trying to help the few that cross his path, he repeatedly encounters a hooded woman who both helps and confounds him by what she says and what she doesn't say. Through memories, dreams and flashbacks he converses with his dead friend who urges the soldier to leave him behind. Bound by honor, he pushes ever eastward to fulfill his oath and make sense of the world around him.
