England, 1924: Jane Fairchild and Paul Sheringham have been secretly in love for some time. Paul comes from a good family, while Jane is an orphaned maid from the neighboring estate. On a sunny Sunday in March, they meet for one last rendezvous. Paul is soon to marry another woman. It is Mothering Sunday, a day off for many, an opportunity for outings and picnics in the countryside. The masters and servants are out of the house, so Jane can cycle unnoticed and carefree to Paul, who has convinced his family that he has something important to do on his own before joining them for the picnic. For the first time, Jane is allowed to enter the mansion through the main gate. She is allowed to be more than she has been before. She is allowed to feel that there could be more to life. When Paul later sets off, Jane, inspired by their recent lovemaking, wanders alone through the sprawling building, unaware of the fateful turn this special holiday has in store.
