Rome in the 1970s: Clara (Penelope Cruz) and Felice Borghetti (Vincenzo Amato) move with their three children into an apartment in a newly built apartment block. But the latest comforts and the beautiful view cannot hide the fact that the family idyll is clouded. Clara and Felice have little to say to each other and live side by side without love; he betrays her and is violent. But a separation seems impossible, the social rules are too rigid. Clara often feels lonely in her new home and goes through depressive phases. She takes refuge in her role as a mother. As a passionate, unconventional woman, she sometimes expresses her feelings through dancing and singing and also wants to give her children imagination and lightness so that they can develop. Clara has a particularly close relationship with her eldest daughter Adriana (Luana Giuliani). However, the 12-year-old is aware of the growing tensions between her parents and at the same time, as a teenager, she begins to cut herself off more and more. When she deliberately introduces herself to the neighborhood children as a boy named Adri, the delicate bond that still holds the family together threatens to break.
