In 1963, archaeologists find a mysterious stone box while digging in Mexico. On the present days, in Cleveland, the illegal Mexican immigrant Ambar decides to live there when her mother dies. She finds a job sewing in an illegal factory and looks for a cheap place to live. He discovers a derelict boarding house for women owned by Red, who asks her for one month deposit paid in advance. He says that he is renovating the place and there are only Freja (Vala Noren) and she living in the house so far. During the night, Ambar overhears noises and screaming from her room and has nightmares with a box. Soon she sees a weird man hitting his head against a door. One the other day, Red says that he is his mentally ill brother Becker. Ambar needs a Texas ID to get a better job with her mother's cousin Beto and her co-worker Kinski offers to get one for her. She gives all her money to Kinski that quits the job and disappears. When she asks Kinski's address to her boss, he fires her. Ambar is scared when she sees ghosts in her room and flees the house during the night. Without any money, she asks Red to meet her in a diner and deliver her deposit. He tells her that the money is in the boarding house, and she goes with him back to the house. But soon she finds out who Becker and Red are.
