Hank and Frannie had the bright idea to marry each other on July 4th (Independence Day). On their 5th anniversary, they are getting frustrated with each other. Frannie is a travel agent, but she longs to actually experience travel and adventure. Hank is a mechanic, and more interested in profit than fun. He is perfectly content with their routine, and he does not want any major changes. He has also just purchased a house for them without consulting his wife. After a fight. Frannie storms out of the house. Each spouse seeks solace in a new lover. Hank has a fling with Leila, a free-spirited circus performer. Frannie has a fling with Ray, a charming waiter and aspiring musician. Hank soon decides to convince Frannie to resume their relationship. Unfortunately for him, breaking into Ray's motel room and chasing his estrange wife within an airport does not increase his appeal to Annie.
