Americans Dan Hardesty and Joan Ames meet in a Hong Kong bar. There is an immediate attraction between the two bordering on love at first sight. However, each makes the decision that this meeting will be their one and only for his or her own reason which each does not divulge to the other. However, they are reunited when they are on the same S.S. Maloa sailing to San Francisco via Honolulu. Still not telling the other the reason for not wanting to get together when they met in Hong Kong, they want to make the most of their time together aboard the ship knowing deep in their hearts that things between them can probably go no further once they dock in San Francisco, although Dan has greater hope based on his situation than Joan. Beyond their own situations and their love for each other, what happens between them is affected by others aboard: their respective travelling companions, Dan's being tough talking Steve Burke, a thief named Skippy, and perpetual luxury traveler Countess Barilhaus.
